NARRATIVE:
On 10/23/2023, Tristan Carter was killed when a fleeing Camaro crossed into oncoming traffic and crashed into Carter’s vehicle on State Route 111 near mile marker 16 in Van Buren County.

A Van Buren County sheriff’s deputy detected the Camaro by radar and attempted to catch up to it to make a traffic stop. Deputies were unable to catch the vehicle because of its speed. The Camaro continued northbound at high speed, passing other vehicles before crossing into the southbound lanes and continuing northbound against traffic.

The Camaro narrowly missed a school bus before colliding with Carter’s vehicle near mile marker 16. Carter was pronounced dead at the scene.

Tennessee Highway Patrol investigated the fatal crash. The fleeing driver was later charged with reckless vehicular homicide, felony evading arrest involving risk of death to others, two counts of felony reckless endangerment, and DUI.
