REASON FOR CHASE: Street racing at more than 100 mph in a 35-mph zone.

NARRATIVE: On 11/25/2023, 31-year-old Maria Rangel was killed after Tempe police attempted to stop a Ford Mustang that officers observed street racing near Rural and Terrace roads at more than 150 mph. The Mustang fled the attempted traffic stop. Police said officers did not pursue it. Moments later, the Mustang crashed into a utility pole and palm trees on Rural Road just south of Broadway Road while traveling approximately 153 mph. The impact sent the vehicle airborne and ejected both passengers. Rangel was thrown approximately 80 feet and was transported to a hospital, where she died.
