On 08/06/2023, Columbiana County Sheriff's Office deputies attempted to stop a stolen Chevrolet Silverado driven by Gerald Jackson. Jackson continued driving away, and Deputy Robert Vukovich pursued the truck on Teegarden Road in Center Township. During the pursuit, Jackson crossed the center line on a curve and struck a hatchback driven by 47-year-old Jennifer Hunley head-on. Hunley and her 11-year-old son were seriously injured, while Jackson suffered minor injuries.
Hunley was transported to Mercy Hospital and later entered hospice care. She died on 09/18/2023, 43 days after the collision, from injuries sustained in the crash. Her son survived with serious injuries.
A Columbiana County grand jury indicted Gerald Jackson on multiple charges, including aggravated vehicular homicide, involuntary manslaughter, aggravated vehicular assault, operating a vehicle under the influence, failure to comply with a police order, auto theft, and related offenses. Jackson later pleaded guilty and received an indefinite prison sentence. In 2025, Hunley's estate filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Columbiana County Sheriff's Office, Sheriff Brian McLaughlin, Deputy Robert Vukovich, and Deputy Brian Deak, alleging the pursuit contributed to the fatal crash.
