Utah County deputies arrived in Manning Canyon after receiving a call that a man had shot himself in the leg. When deputies arrived, they allege that the man had a gun. Police shot and killed him. It does not appear that any efforts had been made to get him mental health crisis support before killing him. The location where McCleve was killed is in a completely unpopulated desert canyon and it is unclear why police charged at the man if they felt at risk. Mental health professionals are needed instead of police for mental health crisis calls to avoid such outcomes.
