NARRATIVE: On 11/07/2023, 22-year-old Shana Reahoo Chourd of Utica was killed when the vehicle in which she was a passenger crashed into a tree during a New York State Police pursuit near Rome. At approximately 2:12 a.m., troopers stopped the Acura on State Route 365 near Blackmans Corners Road in Verona after clocking it at 85 mph in a 55-mph zone. While troopers were speaking with the driver, he rolled up the window and drove away at high speed. Troopers pursued east on Route 365 and along several local roads. The driver ran a red light at Route 233 and continued onto Rome-Oriskany Road, Monument Road and Sutliff Road. Troopers eventually lost sight of the Acura. As they approached Route 233, they discovered it had crashed into a tree and stopped on the lawn at 6405 State Route 233. Chourd was transported to Rome Health Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The driver survived with severe internal injuries. The New York Attorney General investigated the death because it occurred following a police pursuit.
