On 05/19/2025, Columbus police responded to a domestic disturbance and hostage situation at an apartment on Hampton Woods Court in northeast Columbus. Jerry D. Smith reportedly assaulted a woman and locked himself inside, firing at officers during the standoff. SWAT were deployed, and the situation lasted over an hour. Around 11:46 p.m., Smith opened the door holding the hostage and holding a firearm. Multiple SWAT officers opened fire, killing him. The hostage escaped and was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is conducting an independent investigation.

On May 18, 2025, Case Taylor Chrouser, 38, was fatally shot by Mohave County Sheriff's Office SWAT deputies during a standoff in Lake Havasu City when police were attempting to arrest Chrouser on multiple charges. After deploying gas, SWAT officers entered the residence and found Chrouser barricaded in a bathroom. Using a camera, they observed him pointing a firearm at the door. Police responded to a report of a suspicious individual near Timothy Drive and Corinne Street in Hattiesburg. Upon arrival, the person allegedly displayed a firearm, and a confrontation followed. Officers opened fire and struck the individual, who was critically injured. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the case and will submit findings to the Attorney General’s Office. No officers were injured. The identity and condition of the individual have not been released.

Police received multiple 911 calls about a man swinging a knife at cars in the 500 block of 16th Avenue. Officers found Sean Ybarra in the 1900 block of 2nd Street still armed with a knife and reportedly yelling at passing vehicles. When Ybarra advanced toward an officer with the knife, the officer opened fire. Ybarra was pronounced dead at the scene. The Critical Incident Response Team is investigating.

Around 5:30 a.m., Michigan State Police and the Flint Area Narcotics Group executed a drug raid at a residence on River Grove Road. A 49-year-old man confronted officers with a shotgun. He refused to drop the weapon and was shot and killed by a trooper. A 47-year-old woman was also shot and survived. Two other men were arrested and a juvenile was taken into custody. The Michigan State Police Second District Special Investigation Section is investigating.

On May 14, 2025, Joshua Farmer, a 19-year-old suspect in a homicide investigation, was fatally shot inside the Durham Police Department headquarters. After an interview concluded, officers were preparing to transport Farmer when he allegedly lunged forward and gained control of an officer's firearm. Police shot and killed him. The incident was captured on internal surveillance cameras.

Anthony Marshall Jr., 47, accused of robbing an Equity Bank in Topeka, was chased by Kansas Highway Patrol across three counties on May 13, 2025. Troopers used stop sticks near the Bridgeport exit off I-135, disabling his car. After veering into a ditch, Marshall died from a self-inflicted gunshot and was pronounced dead at Salina Regional Health Center.

On the evening of May 13, 2025, Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) officers responded to reports of a man firing a gun and yelling in the 7700 block of Lenox Avenue. Upon arrival, officers encountered 44-year-old Calixto Beavenutti, who was armed and non-compliant. Beavenutti retreated into his residence, prompting the deployment of the SWAT team.
Throughout the ensuing hours-long standoff, Beavenutti exited and re-entered his home multiple times, brandishing his firearm and disregarding officers' commands. At one point, he fired a shot, though it remains unclear if it was directed at law enforcement. The situation escalated when Beavenutti attempted to enter a neighboring home while still armed. Despite repeated warnings to stop and drop his weapon, he continued his approach. Fearing for the safety of potential occupants, SWAT officers Phillip McCranie, Kody Cruz, and Shane Lyons discharged their firearms, fatally wounding Beavenutti. Family members later disclosed that Beavenutti had a history of mental health issues, including signs of schizophrenia, and had been self-medicating.

On May 13, 2025, NYPD officers responded to a domestic disturbance call at 108 Christopher Avenue in the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn. A woman reported that her ex-boyfriend had entered her home, was threatening her, and had a history of carrying weapons including machetes and hammers. Officers accompanied her to the apartment, where they encountered the 25-year-old man inside. He allegedly pulled a large black knife from his waistband and advanced toward the officers. A Taser was deployed but failed. One officer opened fire, shooting the man twice in the chest. He was transported to Brookdale University Hospital and pronounced dead. The NYPD Force Investigation Division is reviewing the incident.

Around 9:54 p.m., Syracuse Police responded to reports of shots fired at an apartment building on North Townsend Street. Officers encountered 42-year-old Donnell Hogan, who was actively shooting inside the building. At least one officer fired their weapon during the encounter. Hogan was pronounced dead at the scene. The New York State Attorney General’s Office is investigating the incident.

Thomas Bean, 36, was killed by police after firing a semi-automatic rifle at responding officers during a domestic disturbance call on Washington Drive. Police say Bean had already shot and killed 29-year-old Jesse Bidgood, who was dating Bean’s sister, prior to their arrival. Seven officers from Fairbanks Police and Alaska State Troopers returned fire after Bean shot at patrol vehicles. Two officers sustained minor shrapnel injuries. All involved officers were placed on administrative leave pending investigation.
