On January 31, 2023, at approximately 6:07 a.m., Baltimore County Police Department's Criminal Apprehension Support Team (CAST) conducted surveillance on an SUV occupied by 37-year-old Brian Roger McCourry Jr., who had multiple outstanding warrants. The vehicle was parked in the 10700 block of Pulaski Highway in White Marsh.

Detective J. Trenary opened fire, hitting McCourry in his vehicle. He drove away after the shooting and collided with a civilian vehicle. McCourry was transported to a hospital in critical condition and later died. The Maryland Attorney General's Independent Investigations Division is reviewing the case.
