OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/29/2023, shortly before 8:00 a.m., Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department detectives went to the home of Jeremy Keith Asbury, 31, in the 3000 block of Columbus Circle in west Charlotte while investigating a reported violent sexual assault from the previous day. CMPD Sexual Assault Unit detectives obtained arrest warrants charging Asbury with multiple felonies arising from that investigation.

According to police, the underlying investigation involved a woman's report that she had been abducted at gunpoint, taken to another location and sexually assaulted at gunpoint on 08/28/2023. The allegation was under investigation when detectives went to Asbury's residence, and the warrants were obtained in connection with that allegation.

When detectives arrived at Asbury's home, police reported that he was armed and barricaded himself inside. Detectives and Metro Division patrol officers attempted to communicate with him for an extended period before requesting assistance from CMPD's Special Weapons and Tactics Team.

CMPD SWAT officers responded and surrounded the residence. Police also coordinated with members of Asbury's family and an outside community organization in an effort to communicate with him and obtain a peaceful surrender. The standoff continued for approximately six hours.

During the standoff, Asbury used Facebook Live to broadcast from inside the residence. Video from the incident subsequently circulated publicly and documented portions of the police operation outside his home. Asbury was a father.

Shortly after 2:00 p.m., officers outside the residence heard a gunshot. SWAT officers and MEDIC personnel entered the home and found Asbury suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound with a firearm present. CMPD reported that nobody else was inside the residence when officers entered.

MEDIC transported Asbury to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. He subsequently died from the self-inflicted gunshot wound. CMPD publicly identified him as Jeremy Keith Asbury the following day and confirmed his date of birth as 12/21/1991.
