On 08/25/2023, law enforcement officers were searching for Nathaniel Evans, 41, of Little Rock. Police said Evans had outstanding warrants and was also under investigation in connection with a shooting at a bail bonds business earlier that week.

Members of the U.S. Marshals Service encountered Evans near the U.S. Post Office adjacent to North Little Rock High School. According to North Little Rock Police Chief Patrick Thessing, the marshals attempted to take Evans into custody. Police alleged that Evans displayed a firearm during the attempted arrest and then ran into the post office.

Law enforcement surrounded the post office and evacuated people from inside the building. At least one postal employee initially remained inside and was subsequently removed safely by the North Little Rock Police Department SWAT team.

The incident developed into an armed barricade and standoff. North Little Rock police SWAT officers entered the operation as officers attempted to resolve the situation inside the post office.

According to Chief Thessing, the situation escalated rapidly and North Little Rock police officers opened fire. Evans was struck by police gunfire. Officers attempted lifesaving measures, but Evans died at the scene.
