OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
An off-duty Chicago officer crashed into the curb and killed Maria Tonie Schwab, a pedestrian, while the officer admittedly was driving negligently per police. The officer was not charged. She was cited for using her cell phone and negligent driving only. It is unclear why she lost control of her car and jumped the curb. Tonie Schwab was a popular person who had worked for the local independent school district.
The officer was found to be drunk when causing the accident and in February of 2024 was charged with Aggravated DUI/Accident/Death, one felony charge of Aggravated Use of Communication Device/Death, two misdemeanor charges of Failure to Give Info/Render Aid/Injury and one misdemeanor charge of Reckless Driving. She was also cited for Failure to Reduce Speed and Improper Traffic Lane Usage.
