On February 28, 2023, Charlottesville Police Department and Albemarle County Police Department officers engaged with a 44-year-old wanted subject during a prolonged encounter in the area of the Route 250 Bypass and Hydraulic Road in Charlottesville, Virginia. A detective from Albemarle County Police initially located the subject, who fled on foot into a wooded area and fired several rounds. Law enforcement established a perimeter and attempted negotiations and less-lethal methods. The subject then moved toward a populated parking area and, according to police, pointed a firearm at officers. Officers discharged their weapons, striking the subject. The man was transported to the University of Virginia Medical Center where he died from gunshot injuries. The Virginia State Police investigated the shooting in cooperation with local agencies. The subject’s father publicly disputed aspects of the police narrative, stating his son was not posing a direct threat when shot.
