OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On February 28, 2023, United States Marshals Service deputies located a wanted subject in the 4300 block of 3rd Street SE in Southeast Washington, D.C., during an arrest operation. When deputies attempted to apprehend the 22-year-old male, he fled on foot and, according to law enforcement, produced a firearm. The marshals discharged their weapons, striking the subject. Deputies and emergency responders rendered aid; the man died from gunshot injuries and was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The Metropolitan Police Department’s Force Investigations Team took charge of the investigation. A firearm was recovered at the scene. Family members and community members held vigils calling for transparency and questioned aspects of the police narrative.
