On February 22, 2023 around 7:55 p.m., Rampart Division patrol officers responded to a radio call of an assault in the area of Silver Lake Boulevard and Temple Street where an unhoused Latina woman named Mariela Cardenas was pointing a pellet gun at passersby. Police shot and killed her. LAPD lists the three officers involved in the shooting: Miguel Salazar, Jacqueline McBride, and Preston Moseby, who are all assigned to Rampart Division.Jacqueline McBride is the daughter of the department’s police union boss, Jamie McBride. McBride’s other daughter, Toni, was involved in a shooting that killed Daniel Hernandez, 38, in 2020.Her father Jamie McBride reportedly shot at least seven people in his career. The shooting of Cardenas was cleared by AG Bonta.
