Christopher Cauch, 43, had reportedly carjacked a vehicle earlier that evening in Lakewood and then barricaded himself inside the convenience store. He locked two employees in the back office and held one at knifepoint.

Officers arrived after receiving 911 calls about a potential robbery and stabbing. Through a small window in the locked office, officers observed Cauch threatening an employee with a sharp object. After breaching the door, officers saw Cauch holding the weapon to the employee's neck and issuing threats.

On 02/26/2024 at approximately 3:00 p.m., Cesar Martha called 911 and reported that he believed someone was following him and that he had a handgun. San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the 2600 block of North Mountain Avenue in Upland and located his parked vehicle. Deputies heard gunfire in the area and requested air support.
A helicopter crew observed Martha in nearby hills firing a handgun. Deputies from the Specialized Enforcement Division and crisis negotiators responded and attempted to communicate with him. According to the Sheriff’s Office, Martha later moved from his position toward deputies while still holding the handgun. Deputies opened fire, striking him. He was pronounced dead at the location.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division assumed the investigation.
