Event : Killed by police after alleged shoplifting of sunglasses

OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

Fairfax County PD responded to a report of shoplifting and found a man who fled on foot and was chased by officers. Police claim Johnson refused orders to get on the ground and he was shot and killed by Officers Wesley Shiflett and James Sadler. He had been unarmed. No sunglasses were found and it is not clear whether any shoplifting had ever taken place.

***UPDATE 10/20/2023***
Officer Wesley Shiflett was fired and was indicted on 10/12/2023 by a special grand jury for involuntary manslaughter and firearms charges in the death of Johnson. Shiflett's attorney waived the reading of the two charges, said he believes his client will be found not guilty.

Manslaughter is a Class 5 felony in Virginia. If convicted, he will face one to ten years of imprisonment and/or a fine of up to $2500.

For involuntary manslaughter, the penalty is almost exactly the same as voluntary manslaughter with maximum of ten years in state prison, plus up to a $2500 fine. However, some judges will extend leniency, and yhe may only be jailed for a maximum of one year in county jail.

A trial date has not been set so far but a jury trial is expected within nine months. This page will be updated when new information becomes available.
