Hemet Police Department officers were first dispatched to Johnston Avenue and State Street around 10 a.m. to look for a person involved in a theft. Homeowner Christian Drye was shot dead by police in his own backyard after being mistaken for the person they were looking for. Drye was a local homeowner and a married father of five who was in his backyard with a gun to check on the disturbance police had caused when he was shot and killed by invading police.
