On January 22, 2024, deputies from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office responded to a mental health crisis involving 81-year-old Janet Sours at Rails End Mobile Home Park in Wildwood, Florida. Deputies arrived and engaged with Sours, alleging that she drew a knife from behind her back and moved toward a deputy. The deputy fired their weapon, striking Sours. She was transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at approximately 12:48 a.m.
