OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On May 28, 2024, at approximately 9:00 a.m., Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) officers responded to an armed carjacking at a gas station in the 2800 block of North Post Road, where a masked individual, later identified as 20-year-old Jerrett Dewayne Gray Jr., approached a vehicle and threatened a woman with a firearm, stealing her white 2015 Dodge Charger. The man drove away in the stolen vehicle.

An IMPD officer located both vehicles at the Cavalier Court apartment complex in the 3800 block of Breen Drive. Gray fled on foot with officers chasing him. Gray reportedly dropped an item and attempted to retrieve it. The officer opened fire, striking Gray.

Officers allegedly recovered two more weapons "near Gray," described as one being equipped with an extended magazine and the other with a machine gun conversion device. It is unclear where he allegedly transported these or how he allegedly transported these weapons while running away from police and where specifically they were found. Gray was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The IMPD’s Critical Incident Response Team initiated a criminal investigation, while Internal Affairs conducted a separate administrative review.
