On 05/26/2024, San Luis Obispo Police Department (SLOPD) officers responded to a "man with gun" call in Grover Beach, California, after a man, later identified as Aaron Edward Gardner, allegedly displayed a firearm to another individual. Officers located Gardner, who fled on foot. After a brief pursuit, Gardner allegedly threatened to shoot at police and raised an object in his hands. Police fired their weapons, shooting and killing him.

Upon investigation, it was determined that the object Gardner raised was a plastic replica gun, not a real firearm. The San Luis Obispo Police Department is conducting a review of the shooting.
