Event : Pedestrian killed by police chase crash with school bus

OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On May 10, 2024, at approximately 11:00 a.m., an Albany Police Department (APD) officer, responding to a burglary-in-progress call with lights and sirens activated, proceeded eastbound through the intersection of North Jefferson Street and Seventh Avenue in Albany, Georgia. Simultaneously, a Crisp County Schools bus, traveling northbound on North Jefferson Street, entered the intersection. The APD patrol car collided with the bus, causing the bus to veer onto the sidewalk, where it struck 67-year-old pedestrian Robert Wayne Skaggs, pinning him against a traffic light post. Skaggs sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The collision resulted in seven individuals, including several students, being transported to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital; three were reported in critical condition. The Georgia State Patrol is conducting an investigation to determine the circumstances leading to the crash.
