On May 15, 2024, at approximately 11:45 a.m., Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) officers responded to a report of a person shot in the 6300 block of Watercrest Way, Indianapolis. Witnesses identified 26-year-old Kelvin Andrew Chandler as the shooter, stating he had left with a handgun.

Officer Joshua Frees located Chandler in the 6500 block of Apollo Way. According to IMPD, Chandler allegedly fired at Officer Frees. Officer Frees opened fire, striking Chandler, who was pronounced dead on location.

The Marion County Coroner's Office confirmed Chandler’s identity. IMPD's Critical Incident Response Team, with oversight from the Marion County Prosecutor's Office, is leading the investigation. Officer Frees has been placed on administrative leave per department protocol. No resolution has been reported by the date of this update.
