On May 11, 2024, at approximately 5:15 p.m., Atlanta Police Department officers responded to reports of a man holding a firearm near Genessee Avenue and Fairbanks Street SW in Atlanta, Georgia. Upon arrival, officers encountered 41-year-old Claudy Pierre Jules, who was holding a handgun and a knife in the street. Officers engaged Jules and instructed him to drop the weapons.

When Jules raised the handgun, officers tackled him to the ground in an attempt to disarm him. During the struggle, a gunshot was fired, and police responded by firing additional shots, fatally wounding Jules. Three officers sustained gunshot injuries in the encounter: one was shot in the arm, another in the leg, and a third suffered a graze wound. All were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital and are expected to recover.
