On January 13, 2023 near 500 North Star Crest Drive, Salt Lake City Police Department’s Gang Unit was investigating someone with a felony warrant and requested additional SLCPD patrol officers to help with a traffic stop. Officers claim they gave repeated orders to everyone in the car to exit. Body worn camera video recorded sounds of Halai reversing and hitting a parked car and fleeing. Police used spike strips. Halai continued driving.
At approximately 3:08 a.m., Halai crashed head-on into an empty, parked truck near 500 North Star Crest Drive. Halai got out and ran south towards a house. An officer deployed a taser and two other officers fired shots. Halaifled into a home through a ground-level window. A third SLCPD officer fired additional rounds prior to fully entering the home.Several officers entered the home through the window, front door, and garage. Officers found Halaiinjured inside the home’s living quarters and found him and two people who were living in the home in the same room.
Halai died on Saturday January 21, 2023.No officers were charged.

The Bexar County Sheriff's Office on January 12 initiated a high-speed chase resulting in a fatal crash that happened on Military Drive West just before 1 a.m. after a traffic safety unit pulled over a vehicle driving over 60 mph in a 35 mph zone. The deputy alleges he saw drugs in plain view when he approached the passenger side which the driver said were prescription drugs. The driver also voluntarily told deputies that he had a gun. He allegedly refused to get out of the car and drove away at high speed as the traffic stop worsened. Deputies escalated a chase and the driver lost control, crashed into a pole, then a U-Haul truck and flipped his vehicle onto its side. The crash caused the driver to be ejected and he was pronounced dead. The unnamed person was at fault only for speeding and possibly possession of recreational drugs but it is unclear what the dire emergency was that prompted police to undertake this chase that endangered an entire community before killing a driver for relatively small transgressions for such a risky police approach. No officers were charged.

Saratoga Springs PD allege that around 11 p.m. on 01/09/2022 in Lehi, they had stopped a white Chevy Suburban in the area of 1000 East and Main Street but thatthe driverdrove away during the traffic stop. Lehi PD and Utah County Sheriff deputies escalated a chase inside of Saratoga Springs city limits. Deputies put down spike strips and punctured the tires but the vehicle continued to drive.
Police claim that the chase was terminated for a short time. When Saratoga Springs PD saw the Suburban a short time later, 2 agencies were chasing the man together. After driving into a dead-end street, he allegedly exited the vehicle, fled on foot and attempted to enter a random residence. Police allege they saw a gun and shot and killed him. Police painted a somewhat misleading picture in the media of Sallee having been an armed gunman trying to break into a residence when the full context revealed so far shows a man who ran in fear from police and apparently looked for a place to hide rather than having any intentions of burglary. He is also not accused of using the gun which makes him part of the 1/3 of Americans who carry guns in public for protection.
2News reported that they had reached out to Saratoga Springs Police for further information on what prompted police to stop the man, and if they know why the man fled but no reply has been posted. No officers were charged. The killing was justified by the DA in July of 2023.
