On May 15, 2024, at approximately 12:30 a.m., off-duty Atlanta Police Officer Koby Minor fatally shot his Lyft driver, 35-year-old Reginald T. Folks, near South Fulton Parkway and Stonewall Tell Road in Union City, Georgia. Officer Minor, who was on unpaid administrative leave due to a prior drug-related arrest, claimed he felt threatened during the ride. He alleged that Folks spoke in a foreign language via the car's Bluetooth system and ignored his requests to stop the vehicle. Believing he was being kidnapped and suspecting an attempt to recruit him into a "gay fraternity," Minor stated that when Folks reached toward the back seat, he discharged his firearm three times, striking Folks in the head. After the shooting, Minor broke a window to exit the vehicle and awaited law enforcement's arrival. Folks was pronounced dead at the scene. Minor was arrested and charged with murder and aggravated assault. He resigned from the Atlanta Police Department following the incident. The Union City Police Department is leading the investigation.
