On the night of May 8, 2024, a Phoenix police officer responded to a call about a shoplifting incident at a convenience store near 35th Avenue and Roosevelt Street, around 11:45 PM. The officer was informed by an employee that two individuals were involved, and one of them fled east on Roosevelt while the other went south on 35th Avenue. The officer pursued the individual who ran east, identified as 27-year-old Christopher Tavares. As the officer closed the distance, Tavares reportedly pulled out a handgun and fired toward the officer’s vehicle, striking it multiple times. In response, the officer fired back, striking Tavares. He was subsequently detained and transported to the hospital, where he died from his gunshot injuries. The second individual involved in the incident was not located.
