OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On May 8, 2024, at approximately 10:20 a.m., the Lakewood Police Department responded to a report of a man threatening individuals with a firearm inside a Walmart store located at 440 Wadsworth Boulevard. The man fled the scene on foot and, shortly thereafter, carjacked an elderly woman near West 4th Avenue and Zephyr Street, stealing her minivan.

Officers located the stolen vehicle and initiated a pursuit. The man led officers to the area of West 6th Avenue and Garrison Street, where he crashed into another vehicle. Upon exiting the minivan, the man allegedly pointed a firearm at officers. In response, six officers discharged their weapons, fatally striking him. A handgun was recovered at the scene.

The Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team is conducting an independent investigation into the incident. The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, per standard protocol.
