At approximately 1:58 a.m. on May 5, 2024, Lemonte Anthony Knobelock was involved in a confrontation with an Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) trooper on Loop 101 near University Drive in Tempe, Arizona. The incident began when the trooper stopped to check on a vehicle that had been reported for erratic driving. Upon contact, Knobelock refused to comply and barricaded himself in his car. Approximately 30 minutes later, he allegedly displayed a handgun, prompting the trooper to open fire, fatally wounding Knobelock. The trooper involved was not injured, and the Arizona Department of Public Safety's Major Incident Division is investigating the shooting.
