On May 4, 2024, at approximately 3:51 a.m., Atlanta Police Department officers responded to reports of a shooting outside Magic City, a prominent strip club located at 241 Forsyth Street SW in Atlanta, Georgia. Upon arrival, officers discovered 32-year-old Gerrone Avery with multiple gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene. Preliminary investigations revealed that an off-duty Spelman College police officer was present during an altercation between two groups, during which the officer discharged their firearm. Authorities believe Avery was among the aggressors in the incident.
