On May 3, 2024, Fresno Police Department officers attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle operating without headlights near First Street and Gettysburg Avenue. The driver failed to yield, leading officers on a brief pursuit. The pursuit was terminated by a field supervisor, but the suspect vehicle continued westbound on Santa Ana Avenue, eventually jumping a curb into Cary Park near Fashion Fair Mall. The vehicle struck two pedestrians, 31-year-old Shaylee Henry and a 30-year-old male, who were standing behind the baseball backstop. Henry was pronounced dead at the scene, while the male victim sustained critical injuries and was transported to Community Regional Medical Center. The suspect vehicle continued through the park's parking lot into a nearby neighborhood, where it became lodged between a pole and a tree near Santa Ana Avenue and Thesta Street. Two male suspects fled the scene on foot and remain at large. The Fresno Police Department's Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating the incident.
