On 02/26/2024, North Charleston Police officers pursued a vehicle that entered Berkeley County along Highway 78 near Ladson. Police allege that the vehicle may have been involved in a previous shots fired call. Police stopped the vehicle after the pursuit. During the confrontation that followed, officers opened fire.
During the incident, a North Charleston Police patrol vehicle struck 37-year-old John Daniels. He died from injuries sustained after being hit by the police vehicle. The Berkeley County Coroner identified Daniels following the incident.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division conducted the independent investigation into the shooting and the fatal collision. Authorities have not publicly released the names of the officers involved. No criminal charges against officers have been announced.
