On 02/26/2024, Houston Police Officer Orlando Hernandez pursued a vehicle near Tidwell Road and Antoine Drive in northwest Houston. Police initiated the pursuit after attempting to stop a vehicle connected to a reported aggravated assault involving a firearm. The driver continued driving, and Hernandez escalated the chase.
During the pursuit, Hernandez drove at speeds reported to approach 100 mph on rain-slick roadways. The patrol vehicle lost control, left the roadway, mounted the sidewalk, and struck 62-year-old Michael Jackson, who was walking along the sidewalk. The patrol unit then collided with a dumpster and other objects before coming to rest.
Jackson died from blunt force injuries. A Harris County grand jury later declined to indict Officer Hernandez. Prosecutors stated the grand jury reviewed dashcam footage, vehicle data, and pursuit policy before returning the no-bill decision.
