On April 27, 2024, at approximately 7:09 a.m., deputies from the Washington County Sheriff's Office arrived at a residence on Salem Drive in Sunny Hills, Florida, to execute an out-of-county arrest warrant for 42-year-old Brian James Propes. The warrant included 20 counts related to the possession or intentional viewing of child sexual abuse material, with a bond set at $200,000.

Upon arrival, deputies were informed by a family member that Propes was in a rear bedroom. They proceeded to the location and informed Propes of the warrant, attempting to take him into custody. Propes resisted arrest. The deputies engaged in a physical altercation with him. He reportedly produced a gun, pointing it at them. Deputies opened fire, striking Propes.
