OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On April 26, 2024, at approximately 8:35 p.m., Long Beach Police responded to a report of a home invasion in progress at a residence on the 6800 block of Cerritos Avenue. Upon arrival, they encountered 17-year-old Brandon Ramon Salgado of San Bernardino in the yard of the home. Salgado was armed with what appeared to be a firearm, which was later determined to be a replica. Officers attempted to negotiate with him for over an hour. Salgado did not comply. A SWAT team was preparing to deploy when Salgado was shot by police. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police discovered that he had a plastic replica gun and had been unarmed.

The California Department of Justice is investigating the officer-involved shooting to determine if the use of force was legally justified. The Long Beach Police Department has released body camera footage of the incident, which shows officers repeatedly asking Salgado to drop the weapon before the shooting occurred.
