OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On April 24, 2024, at approximately 6:10 a.m., LAPD officers initiated a pursuit of a gold Chevrolet Suburban driven by 23-year-old Germaine Smith, suspected of burglary. The chase proceeded through South Los Angeles streets until Smith's vehicle struck bicyclist Jose David Monsalve Rojas at the intersection of Hooper Avenue and 46th Street. The impact propelled Rojas over 100 feet, causing fatal injuries. Smith's vehicle continued, colliding with multiple vehicles and a telephone pole before overturning. Smith attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended. Rojas, a Colombian native who had arrived in the U.S. seven months prior, was pronounced dead at the scene. Smith was charged with murder, vehicular manslaughter, felony evading, and felony hit-and-run. He was hospitalized for back pain and died five days later; the cause of death remains under investigation.
