OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On April 23, 2024, at approximately 10:21 p.m., a Barry County Sheriff's deputy attempted to stop a vehicle for excessive speed on Coats Grove Road near M-66 in Castleton Township. The 16-year-old male driver from the Woodland area failed to stop, leading to a pursuit. The driver lost control of the vehicle, which left the roadway and struck several trees. The impact ejected the driver from the vehicle. He was transported to a hospital in Hastings, where he was pronounced dead. The Michigan State Police are investigating the crash.
