OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
Anthony Ray Johnson Jr., a Marine veteran, was experiencing a mental health crisis and had tried to get medical help. Instead, Tarrant County deputies arrived and took him to jail where he was beaten and had officers kneel on his back. He was heard gasping “I can’t breathe” and died from the physical abuse in jail. Judge Alisa Simmons accused the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office of covering up the death in custody.
