On April 20, 2024, a Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) trooper initiated a high-speed pursuit of a stolen Honda CRV occupied by four teenagers—Lawrence McClendon Jr. (17), Jabril Cheevers (16), Teleak Roberts (15), and Philemon Moore (14)—on State Road 24 near U.S. 301 in Waldo, Florida. The vehicle, reported stolen from Gainesville, was detected by a license plate reader.

As law enforcement attempted a traffic stop, the vehicle initially slowed but then accelerated, reaching speeds up to 111 mph. During the pursuit, the FHP trooper executed a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver, causing the vehicle to roll over and collide with a concrete utility pole. Two occupants were pronounced dead at the scene, while the other two died from their injuries at UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville.
