On October 23, 2024, 42-year-old Abram Perez of Rockford, Illinois, was fatally shot by police following a hostage situation near Rich Road and Nelson Road in DeKalb Township, Illinois. The incident began when officers pursued a vehicle believed to be involved in a Rockford shooting the previous night. Stop sticks were used. Perez, armed with a handgun, had taken a person hostage inside the vehicle. After hours of negotiation, the hostage was released unharmed. Perez fired multiple rounds at law enforcement officers, and a police sniper shot and killed him through the vehicle's windshield.

Hoggro was wanted on multiple felony warrants, including charges of armed robbery, kidnapping, aggravated assault, and weapons offenses related to recent armed robberies in Lawrenceville. On October 20, 2024, Phoenix police officers responded to a trespassing call at a Dollar Tree store located near 37th and Glendale Avenues in Phoenix. The store had reported that 31-year-old Essex Jackson was allegedly refusing to leave and had retreated into a storeroom. When officers arrived, they found Jackson on top of a freezer and attempted to engage him. A struggle ensued when the officers tried to arrest him, and Jackson seized one of their tasers during the altercation. In the case of Taylor Cotton, who was shot and killed by police, the incident occurred at the 1200 block of Rosedale Drive in Dayton, Ohio, on a Saturday morning. During the interaction, the man fired at officers, prompting a trooper to return fire, striking the individual. The man was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The FCSO Crisis Negotiation Team attempted to establish communication, but Garcia did not respond to phone calls or PA instructions.

The SWAT team deployed an ICOR Mini-CALIBER robot to deliver a phone to Garcia, but he did not engage. After hours of silence, the robot was redeployed for surveillance and located Garcia in the bathroom, deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Family members informed law enforcement that Garcia had expressed a refusal to go to jail prior to the standoff.
