Stuart PD tried to traffic-stop a vehicle that fled. Police escalated a chase that ended when the fleeing vehicle ran into 3 other vehicles, killing the 76-year-old driver of a BMW, injuring his female passengers and injuring 3 others in the other bystander vehicles. The crash occurred during evening hours at 7:45 p.m. in a high-traffic area and police ran a chase that ended in an 80-mph impact. The reason stated by police for undertaking this deadly chase was failure to obey traffic stop by another motorist. Police withheld the names and identities of both the man killed and the officer responsible for the fatal chase.
