On April 18, 2024, at approximately 7:45 p.m., a Stuart Police Department officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop near U.S. Highway 1 and Southeast Central Parkway in Stuart, Florida. Police did not disclose the reason for the traffic stop.

During the high-speed chase, the fleeing vehicle collided with a transit bus, which then struck a red BMW driven by a 76-year-old man. The collision resulted in the death of the BMW driver and incapacitating injuries to his 74-year-old female passenger.
