OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On April 17, 2024, at approximately 4:20 p.m., Long Beach Police Department officers responded to a report of a man armed with a gun at MacArthur Park, located at 1321 East Anaheim Street. Upon arrival, officers identified 46-year-old Donald Washington, who matched the suspect's description, sitting on a park bench. Officers exited their vehicle with weapons drawn and issued multiple commands for Washington to remove his hands from his pockets and to drop the firearm. Washington did not comply and began to back away, repeatedly asking, "Why?" As officers continued to instruct him to drop the gun, Washington pulled a firearm from his jacket pocket. An officer then discharged their weapon, striking Washington. After falling to the ground, Washington appeared to raise the gun again, prompting the officer to fire additional rounds. Officers rendered medical aid until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived and transported Washington to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A loaded firearm was recovered at the scene. No officers or bystanders were injured during the incident. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office is conducting an independent investigation, and the Long Beach Police Department is reviewing the officers' actions to ensure compliance with departmental policies.
