OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 04/15/2024, deputies from Grundy County and Will County attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a man who had fled the scene of a domestic disturbance in Aurora, IL, where a 43-year-old woman was found with a gunshot wound. She was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. A statewide BOLO was issued providing a description of the man, 56-year-old Jeffrey Allen Emerson, and his vehicle.

At approximately 10:00 a.m., Grundy County deputies located Emerson's vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. Emerson did not cooperate, and deputies escalated a pursuit that ended in the 21000 block of Cottage Road in unincorporated Wilmington, Will County. Emerson exited his vehicle holding a firearm. Deputies from both Grundy and Will County established a perimeter and issued commands for Emerson to drop the weapon.

Emerson did not respond to the commands and allegedly pointed the firearm at his chest, firing a shot that resulted in a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound. Emerson died from his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The incident is under investigation by the Will County Sheriff’s Office in collaboration with the Will County Coroner’s Office, with the Aurora Police Department handling the investigation related to the initial attempted homicide.
