OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On April 16, 2024, at approximately 1:00 a.m., a carjacking at gunpoint was reported in Hemet, Riverside County. Murrieta Police located the stolen Toyota Camry and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver fled southbound on Interstate 15, initiating a high-speed pursuit. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) deployed spike strips near Gopher Canyon Road, deflating the vehicle's front tires. Despite this, the suspect continued driving until crashing near the Deer Springs Road exit in Escondido. Upon approaching the vehicle, officers found the male driver deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The suspect's identity has not been released. No officers or bystanders were injured during the incident. The CHP is investigating the pursuit and crash circumstances.
