On April 10, 2024, at approximately 3:30 p.m., Deputies Phelan "PJ" Montgomery and Hunter Givens of the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office arrived at 1839 Tulip Tree Lane in Sullivan, Indiana, to discuss specifics of a protective order served earlier that day to 54-year-old resident Cameron Lee Atkins for a reported domestic violence incident the previous evening.

During the encounter, Atkins allegedly pointed a gun at the deputies. Both deputies opened fire, striking Atkins. He was pronounced dead at his home.

Sullivan County Sheriff Jason Bobbitt requested the Indiana State Police to conduct an independent investigation into the incident. Upon completion, the investigation's findings will be submitted to the Sullivan County Prosecutor's Office for review.
