The Elkhart County SWAT team was deployed, established a perimeter, and attempted negotiations. Despite hours of communication, Smith did not surrender. Shortly after midnight, a gunshot was heard from inside the residence. SWAT officers breached the home and discovered Smith deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

SWAT officers also found the body of the female victim, who had sustained fatal gunshot wounds earlier in the evening. No law enforcement personnel fired their weapons.

The Indiana State Police are leading an investigation into the circumstances. Findings will be reviewed by the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office.

On May 22, 2024, at approximately 10:00 a.m., Gulfport Police Department officers observed a man walking along Dedeaux Road in Gulfport, Mississippi. Officers attempted to make contact, but the individual fled and allegedly presented a weapon. Officers opened fire, fatally wounding the man. He was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead.

On May 22, 2024, deputies from the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office in Georgia initiated a high-speed pursuit of a BMW SUV traveling southbound on Interstate 75 at 126 mph. The vehicle, driven by 30-year-old Tisha Andrea Brown of Riviera Beach, Florida, carried six passengers, including four children. The chase continued into Hamilton County, Florida, where deputies deployed spike strips to halt the SUV. Attempting to evade the strips, Brown lost control, causing the SUV to collide with a Toyota RAV4 and a deputy's patrol car. The impact ejected an 11-year-old girl from the SUV, resulting in her death at the scene. The SUV then overturned and caught fire. Four other children, including two 5-month-old infants, sustained critical injuries. The occupants of the RAV4, a 63-year-old man and an 11-year-old boy from Atlanta, suffered minor injuries. The deputy involved also sustained minor injuries. Brown was arrested and faces multiple charges, including six counts of false imprisonment and fleeing law enforcement.

Crail, believed to be involved in the May 14, 2024, fatal shooting of 22-year-old Noah Bryant in Kansas City, Missouri, was found inside a parked SUV.

Law enforcement established a perimeter around the area and cleared the vicinity for public safety. Police negotiators engaged Crail in conversation, attempting to secure his surrender. Despite their efforts, Crail reportedly raised a firearm and fired a single shot, resulting in his death from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
