Asheville PD responded to a call that a man had pointed a rifle at someone. Police arrived in the man, identified as 59-year-old Chad Owen Herman, locked himself into the home. On August 27, 2024, at approximately 9:40 a.m., Dodge County Sheriff's Deputy Adam Walker responded to a 911 call reporting pigs walking around the roadway near Dodge Avenue and Mt. Moriah Street in Eastman, Georgia. Upon arrival, Deputy Walker attempted to contact residents at a nearby home in the 5000 block of Dodge Avenue.

At this location, 58-year-old Kim Lawong Crocker confronted Deputy Walker at the corner of the property with a firearm. On August 27, 2024, at approximately 11:50 a.m., members of the U.S. Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force, along with officers from the Atlanta Police Department and the Henry County Police Department, arrived at 404 Linden Lane in Stockbridge, Georgia, to execute an arrest warrant for 33-year-old Derrick Rankins. Rankins was wanted in connection with the August 20, 2024, murder of 32-year-old Courtney Reese, a mother of four, in Atlanta.
