OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On April 8, 2024, at approximately 7:00 p.m., officers from the St. Joseph Charter Township Police Department conducted a welfare check on a 42-year-old male semi-truck driver from Tennessee in the Fairplain area. Upon arrival, the driver allegedly crashed his semi-truck into a patrol vehicle and then into a nearby home on Riverbend Drive. The driver exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. Officers pursued him, and during a subsequent altercation, an officer discharged their firearm, striking the individual. The suspect was transported to Corewell Health Spectrum Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The involved officer sustained minor injuries and was placed on administrative leave, per department policy. The Michigan State Police are investigating the incident.
