On April 5, 2024, at approximately 4:00 p.m., the California Highway Patrol's Southern Division Organized Retail Crime Task Force was conducting an operation at the Los Cerritos Center in Cerritos, California. During this operation, officers identified three individuals suspected of engaging in criminal activity. As officers approached, the suspects attempted to flee. Two suspects—a male and a female—escaped in a vehicle but were later apprehended in Pico Rivera. The third suspect, identified as 46-year-old Mauricio Sandoval, ran through the mall's parking lot. According to authorities, Sandoval produced a firearm, prompting a CHP officer to discharge their weapon, striking him. Sandoval was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A firearm was recovered at the scene. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is assisting the CHP with the ongoing investigation.
