On April 5, 2024, Georgia State Patrol (GSP) officers initiated a high-speed pursuit of a Ram 1500 pickup truck near Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Fairburn Road in Atlanta for undisclosed reasons. Police had previously pursued this vehicle in prior days but did not report any active warrants or emergent crimes at the time of the chase.

Police escalated a high-speed chase that reached 110 mph and continued onto Interstate 285 before exiting onto Campbellton Road. As police chased the fleeing vehicle, they approached the intersection of Campbellton Road and Barge Road, where he ran a red light and collided with a Dodge Challenger driven by 43-year-old Tamara Taylor, a mother of three, who was turning onto Barge Road.

The force of the collision pushed Taylor’s car off the road and into a utility pole. Taylor was pronounced dead at the scene. Hicks was apprehended and faces charges including felony murder and vehicular homicide.

The GSP’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is investigating the crash. Taylor’s family has questioned the necessity of the high-speed pursuit that led to her death. Her family has started a fundraiser to cover funeral expenses and has expressed deep frustration with the circumstances surrounding her loss.
