On 08/26/2024, officers from the Eau Claire Police Department and the Winona Police Department pursued 59-year-old Scott Adam Jenkins along I-90 near Highway 43 in Winona, Minnesota. Jenkins was reportedly wanted in connection to an armed standoff earlier that day in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

Law enforcement located Jenkins traveling on I-90, leading to a coordinated stop. Officers surrounded Jenkins' vehicle and attempted to engage him in negotiations. After a prolonged standoff, Jenkins reportedly used a firearm to take his own life inside the vehicle.

On August 25, 2024, at approximately 5:30 p.m., deputies from the Atchison County Sheriff's Office attempted to stop a 2014 Toyota Corolla driven by 28-year-old Maria Papalas near the intersection of Sherman Road and 244th Road, approximately five miles south of Atchison, Kansas. Papalas did not stop, initiating a pursuit.

During the chase, she lost control of the vehicle on a curve, causing it to enter the west ditch and roll multiple times before coming to rest on its roof. Her son, 1-year-old Mixalis Christos Papalas-Schultz, was a passenger in the vehicle. Both occupants were transported to hospitals; Papalas sustained minor injuries, while Mixalis suffered critical injuries and was later pronounced deceased.

On August 26, 2024, Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) began a pursuit of a 39-year-old man believed to be involved in a carjacking. Levy County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) joined the chase on U.S. Highway 19. Police allege the man fired shots at officers during the pursuit. Police escalated the chase to speeds of 120 mph. The chase continued across counties until the man crashed on County Road 347 in Chiefland, where he was pronounced dead. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is investigating.

The Valley and McCone County Sheriff’s offices responded to a disturbance call at Roundhouse Point Campground where a man and a woman were arguing outside of a vehicle late at night. Police alleged that when they arrived, the man fired a gun toward them, and the female moved toward the officer who fired a taser at her. The male approached and was shot and killed.

Huntsville police responded to a domestic violence call around 9:30 a.m. on August 24, 2024, at the Reserve at Research Park. Officers arrived to hear gunshots and found a woman and child trying to flee. Naimmikal Wayne Sanders, 38, of Decatur, fired at the woman while an officer was present. The officer then shot Sanders, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman and child were taken to safety, and the woman sustained injuries. On August 20, 2024, at approximately 8:30 a.m., Carroll County Sheriff's Investigator Taylor Bristow, accompanied by Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) agents, executed a search warrant at a residence in the 300 block of Don Rich Drive in Carrollton, Georgia. The warrant was part of an ongoing GBI investigation into child exploitation. Upon knocking, 40-year-old Christopher Bly opened the door and immediately retreated into the home. Deputies pursued Bly inside, where he produced a handgun and fired, resulting in a self-inflicted gunshot wound that also struck Investigator Bristow. Bly was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigator Bristow was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, where he later succumbed to his injuries on August 23, 2024.

Elyria police thought they saw a “hand-to-hand drug transaction” through a vehicle and took up chase. Police escalated to pursuit until the fleeing vehicle crashed into a bystander vehicle in an intersection. Two passengers of the car being chased were killed while the driver and another passenger were injured. The driver of the vehicle that was hit was also transported to the hospital in unknown condition.

On August 23, 2024, at around 12:50 p.m., Altamonte Springs Police officers located 41-year-old Richard Philip Randall Jr. in the 900 block of Wymore Road, Winter Park. Officers approached Randall, who exited his vehicle and ran towards them holding an unknown object. Officers fired multiple shots, striking Randall, who was then transported to a hospital, where he died. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is investigating the incident, and the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave.

On August 23, 2024, at approximately 10:30 a.m., Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department SWAT officers executed a narcotics search warrant at the Park Terrace Motel, located at 9025 Pendleton Pike in Lawrence, Indiana.

Officers announced their presence using sirens and a public address system and instructed the occupants to exit the room. Receiving no response, officers forcibly entered the motel room. Inside, they encountered 40-year-old Kentrail Dumarrio-Elijauan Small and an adult female emerging from the bathroom. The woman complied with commands and was detained uneventfully.

As officers attempted to detain Small, an altercation ensued in the kitchenette area. During the altercation, Small reportedly reached for a Draco firearm—a weapon that discharges rifle rounds. In response, two SWAT officers discharged their service weapons, striking Small.

SWAT medics provided immediate medical aid until emergency medical services arrived. Small was transported to Eskenazi Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

On August 23, 2024, at approximately 4:30 p.m., 17-year-old Brayden Hemphill called 911, stating he was armed with a knife and a handgun and intended to harm himself and others. Gwinnett County Police officers, along with a licensed mental health clinician from the Behavioral Health Unit, responded to the roundabout at West Broad Street and Whitehead Road in Sugar Hill, Georgia. The clinician engaged Hemphill over the phone, during which he disclosed feelings of depression and suicidal ideation. Upon arrival, officers observed Hemphill holding a knife. They issued commands for him to drop the weapon. Hemphill reportedly ignored these commands and advanced toward the officers at a sprint. Two officers discharged their firearms, striking Hemphill. Medical personnel were summoned immediately, but Hemphill was pronounced dead at the scene. A subsequent search revealed he had been unarmed.

On August 22, 2024, at approximately 2:30 p.m., a Georgia State Patrol (GSP) trooper observed Kevin James Kennedy operating a blue four-wheeler on State Road 33 near Lanier Road in Moultrie, Georgia. The trooper, aware of recent thefts and burglaries involving a similar vehicle, initiated a traffic stop. Kennedy failed to comply. The trooper chased him through fields, ditches and back onto the highway. During the chase, the patrol vehicle collided with Kennedy, causing his four-wheeler to overturn. He then tried to run on foot. The trooper deployed a K9 unit that mauled his neck severely. The trooper handcuffed Kennedy and immediately requested medical assistance upon noticing the severity of the K9 bite. Emergency Medical Services arrived, and Kennedy was transported to a hospital in Macon. He died from his injuries on August 27, 2024. His family attributes his death to only the blood loss and severe neck injury from the dog mauling. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is conducting an inquiry into the death.

An El Paso Independence School District officer shot and killed a man in his 50s on school campus.

On 8/22/2024, it was reported that the man shot and killed was retired 54-year-old FBI agent Julio Cordero whose son was a senior at the school.

FBI agent Cordero had a long and distinguished career, notably bringing about more than 40 convictions of prominent El Paso citizens involved in massive public corruption. He suffered PTSD and was known to have mental health crises as well and retired. Lengthy descriptions of his life and struggles are enclosed in the links below. Chester County deputies chased a man who refused a traffic stop. Police alleged that he pointed a weapon. Police fired shots at him. The man fled and police chased him at high speed through McNairy County into Hardin County. After an hour-long chase, the man drove down a boat ramp and drove the vehicle into the water. Police say that he “showed” a weapon police did not attempt to follow him into the water and found him dead later.

On August 22, 2024, at approximately 7:00 p.m., deputies from the Polk County Sheriff's Office responded to a call about 45-year-old Matthew Bruce Coleman, who was wanted on an active warrant. When officers arrived at West Socrum Loop Road in Lakeland, they were met with gunfire coming from a shed. Deputies established a perimeter and attempted communication with Coleman, but when he stopped responding, a chemical agent was deployed. Upon entry into the shed, deputies found Coleman deceased from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, with two loaded handguns and several shell casings nearby.

On August 21, 2024, at approximately 4:25 a.m., Hialeah Police responded to a domestic violence incident at a residence on West 42nd Place and West 5th Court. When officers arrived, they found 30-year-old Alex Gonzalez Jr. had fatally stabbed his mother, Madeline Gonzalez, and injured his 17-year-old sister, Amanda Gonzalez, and 69-year-old grandmother, Rosa Gonzalez. Police confronted Gonzalez Jr., and officers fired, killing him at the scene. Madeline Gonzalez died from her injuries, while the other two women survived. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the incident.
