On 04/10/2024, deputies from the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office attempted to arrest 28-year-old Clint Lavelle Hoyhtya near Crestwood Drive East and Mayview Road in Minnetonka, Minnesota. Hoyhtya was reportedly wanted on an outstanding warrant and was located after a brief search.

Upon confrontation, Hoyhtya allegedly displayed a firearm, prompting officers Christopher Heihn, Tyler Jacob, Keith McNamara, and Steven Tomasko to fire their weapons. Hoyhtya was struck multiple times and pronounced dead at the scene.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is investigating the incident, and findings will be reviewed by the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office to determine whether the use of deadly force was justified.

On April 9, 2024, at approximately 6:55 a.m., a motorist reported a vehicle stopped in the westbound lane of U.S. Highway 160, about one mile west of Attica, Kansas. A Harper County Sheriff's deputy arrived and found a tan 2006 Toyota Prius halted in the middle of the highway. Approaching to offer assistance, the deputy observed the driver, 54-year-old Cheryl R. Gaines of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, holding a knife in one hand and scissors in the other.

An officer from the Attica Police Department soon joined the deputy. Both officers retreated approximately 100 yards from the vehicle and repeatedly commanded Gaines to drop her weapons and exit the car. Gaines exited the vehicle but refused to relinquish the knife and scissors. She then charged at the officers. As they retreated, the Attica officer tripped and fell. Gaines approached the fallen officer, still armed, prompting the Harper County deputy to fire three shots, striking her.

On April 5, 2024, deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff's Office Thermal Station responded to a "man with a knife" call in the 44000 block of Vista Dunes Lane in La Quinta, California. Upon arrival, deputies encountered Ramiro Tapia Gonzales, 28, who was reportedly armed with a large knife and behaving aggressively. Deputies issued repeated commands for Gonzales to drop the weapon.

According to body camera footage released by the sheriff’s office, Gonzales advanced toward the deputies with the knife in hand, prompting one of the deputies to fire. Gonzales was struck by the gunfire and later pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is conducting an investigation into the incident. No additional information regarding the involved deputies has been disclosed at this time.

During the stop, officers detected the odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle. As officers prepared to search the vehicle, the male driver, whose identity remains undisclosed, reportedly produced a firearm and died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the location.

On 04/04/2024, deputies from the Lake County Sheriff's Office initiated a pursuit of a vehicle traveling at high speeds on a local roadway. The chase began when the driver, later identified as 79-year-old Antoine Pierre, failed to stop for a traffic violation and fled the scene.

During the pursuit, speeds reached over 100 mph. As the chase continued through residential areas, deputies used stop sticks in an attempt to disable the vehicle. Pierre's vehicle struck a guardrail near the Des Plaines River, causing it to veer off the road and crash into the river.

Pierre was ejected from the vehicle upon impact and was found deceased at the scene. Emergency responders attempted to revive him, but he was pronounced dead shortly after being recovered from the water.

Weakley County deputies were sent to Travis Road where someone had set a stolen car on fire. Officers found Bobby Dickens in the home, started a standoff and allege that he came out of the home with a knife and they shot and killed him.

At approximately 10 p.m. on April 4, 2024, Tucson Police Department (TPD) officers responded to a domestic violence call at a residence in the 7400 block of East Calle Merida. Upon arrival, officers were informed that Jacob Dryer, 27, was intoxicated and had assaulted people inside the house. Dryer had reportedly taken a knife from one of the victims and was believed to be armed with several weapons, including a shotgun. As the situation escalated, two victims were able to escape the house.

A standoff ensued, with Dryer barricading himself inside the home. The TPD attempted to negotiate with Dryer, but he refused to communicate and engaged in erratic behavior, including breaking glass and racking a shotgun. The police used less-lethal measures, including K-9s, in an attempt to subdue him. Dryer emerged from the home and appeared to be attempting to enter a vehicle before retreating back inside. Hours later, he reappeared at the door, allegedly pointing a firearm toward officers. In response, Officer Kyle Frank, a 16-year veteran of the TPD, discharged his weapon, fatally shooting Dryer.

A subsequent search of the home revealed seven firearms and several hundred rounds of ammunition. No officers or other community members were injured during the incident.

The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team (PRCIT), which investigates police-involved shootings, is handling the investigation. The findings will be forwarded to the Pima County Attorney’s Office for review.
