On April 4, 2024, Riverside Police Department officers responded to a domestic violence call at a residence on the 3400 block of Chestnut Street. Upon arrival, officers encountered 59-year-old Shawn Keal Palacat, who was allegedly armed with a knife.

Police reported that Palacat advanced toward them, ignoring repeated commands to drop the weapon. An officer discharged their firearm, striking Palacat. Medical aid was rendered at the scene, but Palacat was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. A knife was recovered at the scene.
