OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On April 4, 2024, Hammond Police Department officers conducted a traffic stop in the 3800 block of Hohman Avenue in Hammond, Indiana. During the stop, officers detected the odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle. As officers prepared to search the vehicle, the male driver, whose identity remains undisclosed, reportedly produced a firearm and died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the location.

The Hammond Police Department initiated an internal review of the incident, and the involved officers were placed on administrative leave. The findings will be submitted to the Lake County Prosecutor's Office for further review.
